Established in 1951, Fatima Mata National College (Autonomous), Kollam is a Christian Minority College managed by Latin Catholic Community under the visionary guidance and leadership of Rt. Rev. Dr. Stanley Roman, Bishop of Quilon.
But the college was formally inaugrated on December 29, 1952, by Norman Thomas Cardinal Gilroy, the Papal Legate to the first Plenary Council of India to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.
The college is affiliated to the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.
It was re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.13 on a 4 Point Scale in 3rd Cycle) on March 23, 2013.
The aim of the college is geared itself up to provide an ambience that will ensure an all-round growth of the students’ personalities and turn them out into useful citizens of our country also to foster social responsibility as it also envisions a spiritual vision of life with emphasis on promoting love towards the motherland and a spirit of selfless sacrifice.
It is a co-educational self-financed Institute, providing regular courses in which is located in the urban part of Kollam played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
Fatima Mata National College is a college in the Indian state of Kerala, named after Our Lady of Fatima, a Catholic title of Virgin Mary as seen in apparition at Fatima, Portugal in 1917.
The college was founded by Jerome M. Fernandez, then Catholic bishop of Quilon, with a view to expanding the facilities for higher education in the diocese.
In 1953 it became the first-grade college with the introduction of degree courses in Economics, Commerce, and Zoology.
It was conferred autonomous status in 2014, thus becoming one of the first autonomous colleges in Kerala.
The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government. The student's admission is done as per the admission criteria prescribed by the affiliating university.
The college had received many awards and accolades at a city, state and national level for their educational advancements also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of sports and curricular activities under the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram.
At present, the college offers three years undergraduate and two years of postgraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams with various specializations under the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. It also offers Add-On Certificate courses as well.
Students should have to choose one honor (core) subject with two or more as subsidiary (elective) subjects for the specific undergraduate streams.
University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, and various other examinations are held in the college premises.
