Department of Journalism and Mass Communication - Banaras Hindu University was established in 1973 in the faculty of Arts. It is one of the constituent departments of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.

The department provides a fertile field by giving an opportunity for the students to interact with the best professionals education and industrial houses thus enriching their learning experience.

The department courses as per the norms and conditions of the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. The departmental library has more than 5 thousand titles. It has a computer laboratory of 40 systems with Internet connectivity.

The departmental film library has more than 200 CDs and DVDs of classic films. It has the state of the art equipment for TV and radio programme production. Till date, more than ten doctoral students have successfully completed their Ph. D degrees from the department. The department publishes its students’ laboratory news bulletin called Parisar.

At present, the department offers two years postgraduate courses in Master of Arts in Mass Communication, Master of Arts in Corporate Communication, PG Diploma in Health Communication (Innovative Project), and PG Diploma in Journalism & Mass Communication (offered at RGSC).
