Deshbhakta Ratnappa Kumbhar College of Commerce, Kolhapur was established in 1998. It is affiliated to Shivaji University.

The Council of Education was established under the auspicious leadership of Late Dr. Ratnappa Kumbhar. We take pride in being guided by late Dr. Ratnappa Kumbhar, who was a reputed Freedom Fighter social reformer, notable senior political leader, and educationist and honored as “Sahakar Maharshee”. He was awarded by Doctorate by Poona University and Padmashree by Government of India.

At present, the Council of Education runs the following colleges

• Shahaji Law College (Estd.1933)
• D.R.K. College of Commerce (Estd.1957)
• Night College of Arts and Commerce (Estd.1971)

The Council of Education played a pioneering role in imparting Law, Commerce and Management Education in this region of Maharashtra to tap the talent from this area.

Law College was started in 1933 when no facility for Law Education was available from   Pune   to Belgaum. D.R.K. College of Commerce   was established in 1957 when there was no commerce college from Pune to Belgaum M.B.A. course was started in 1971, when management education facility was not available from Pune to Bangalore. The Council of Education was the first to start Night College with a view to provide on opportunity of learning to people employed.

D.R.K. College of Commerce   is located in the heart of the city and equipped with excellent infrastructural facilities. It is a reputed single faculty Commerce of College in this region.

The college started initially by enrolling 135 students In an old building then known as “Paga building”. At present the college has H.S.C. (General and M.C.V.C.), B.Com. BBA and M.B.A. classes having a strength of more than 2800 students. The number of girls students has increased from 4 to 1400 during 4 decades and at present it is 50% of the total strength.

During the 1970’s there was an urgent need for professionally educated personnel from the developing industrial sector. As stated above no facilities for management education were available from Pune to Bangalore. To cater to the need of the society, the Council of Education started the post-graduate course in management (M.B.A.) in 1971 without monetary consideration.

In addition the college conducts coaching class for C.A. Foundation /P.E.- I since 1992. We are proud to state that, the college is recognized to conduct coaching classes for P.E. II from June 2003.

Ours is an approved center for National level professional examinations like C.A.ICWA. & ICFAL. This is the most convenient facility provided to the candidates from local as well as the surrounding districts i.e. Sangli, Satara, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Solapur.
