Deshbandhu College for Girls, Kolkata was established in 1955. The college as an affiliated college of the University of Calcutta.

This college is accredited by N.A.A.C. and recognised by U.G.C. Deshbandhu College for Girls, dedicated to the memory of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das was founded by the Late Dr. Hemendra Nath Das Gupta and the Late Principal Jitesh Chandra Guha with the the utmost efforts of Dr.Suddhasattwa Bose and Sri Nakshatra kumar Ray Chaudhury.

Situated at the heart of South Kolkata, Deshbandhu College For Girls has Continually Contributed to the spread of higher education among women for the last sixty years.

The earliest history of the college dates back to 1950 when due to the sincere efforts of a group of some dedicated education enthusiasts, the college started its journey with the objective of opening up the world of higher education to local school leaving girls from humble families. The persons behind such efforts were Dr. Hemendra Nath Dasgupta, Sri Jitesh Chandra Guha, Dr Suddhaswatta Bose and Sri Nakshatra Raychaudhury.

At this initial stage the college has no building of its own. Classes were held in the morning hours in the building of Deshbandhu Girls School at Sadananda Road.

The college got affiliated to the University bOf Calcutta in 1955 and it achieved its own building at the present location at rashbehari Avenue in 1975.

Thus from a humble beginning, the college has come a long way to be one of the fastest growing institutions for girls in kolkata. renowned historians and educationists like Dr. Nihar Ranjan Ray and Pratul Chandra Gupta had been activelly associated with the development of the college.

The college offers both honours and General degree Courses in most of the major subjects in Humanities. It also offers Honours Degree Course in Commerce and a professional anmd employment oriented course like BBA (Honours).

Environmental Science is being offered as a subject in the General Course from this Academic Year, 2017-18.

Besides studies the college also takes particular care in developing the overall personality of the students. Cultural functions, sports, academic seminars, career counselling various awareness programmes, NSS, NCC, Women self-defence courses (under Sukanya a Kolkata police Initiative) and a host of other student activities (under drama Club, the Photography Club, the Cine Club, etc) are held throughout the academic sessions.

The college has a well stocked library with a rich reference section and a depatmental library for each of the departments offering honours Courses. The departments have several audio-visual teaching aids to make learning enjoyable and beneficial to the students. The college has also an high-end computer laboratories to equip the students with modern and advance technical knowledge.

The college has opened a well equiped Girl’s hostel with all essential amenities from January 2014. The college runs on reasonable energy generated from solar space installed on the building roof. This is our institutions response towards Green Initiatives.

The college has a very peaceful ambience ideal for serious academic pursuits. The administration is strict in maintaing discipline among the students. the faculties of the college are devoted and sincere in ensuring regular classes, timely tests and examinations and overall academic upgradation of the students.

MISSION & VISION

The mission of Deshbandhu College For Girls is to carry forward the dream of the founders of the College to educate young women and prvide an atmosphere conducive to the all round development
of the students. The Foundes attempted to imbibe the ideats of Chittaranjan Das when they built the College.

In its 60 years of service to society it has striven to provide educational opprtunities to young women
and inculcate a sense of discipline and comradeship among them as also to provide a platform to channelize the creative impulses of the students in a bid to recognize their talents.

The College aspires to create an atmosphere that will help build strong self supportive and progressive young women who can face the
challenges of a modern globalised world and contribute towords the establishment of a better society.

The college envisions in moduling and nurturing young women from all strata of society to women of substance. With a fair number of students coming from economically challenged backgrounds and comprising even of first generation learners, the Collge takes on the additional challenge of educating and grooming them to emerge as confident and independent young women. The college commits itself to the service of the nation by helping women grow against their diverse backgrounds in terms of plurality of religion and diversity of cultures and in facing different socio-economic challenges. The emphasis therefore is on the all round development of the student.
