Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, University of Mysore, Mysuru, is a is the constituent department of Mysore University.
The Department of Mass Communication was established on 9th August 1972 to facilitate students of North Karnataka to specialize in the field of mass communication.
However, the regular classes were formally inaugurated on 20th September 1972.
The department is self-affiliated with the University of Mysore, Mysuru and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.
The aim of the college is helping its members realize spiritual and moral as well as intellectual and aesthetic values also maintain its cosmopolitan and pluralistic tradition by enrolling young scholars from diverse communities and different social and economic backgrounds.
It is a co-educational Institute, providing a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Mysuru played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
The department conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government.
The University of Mysore is the 6th oldest university in India and the oldest in the state of Karnataka and established in 1916 by Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV.
It is a state govt. university to offers different courses with the admission by COMED - K, CET or internal own selection process for the student.
The Department of Journalism at the Maharaja’s College, Mysore was started in 1951 and Journalism was offered as one of the three optional subjects for the students.
Thus, the University of Mysore created history by introducing Journalism as a subject of study at the post-graduate level offering M.A. degree.
The college had received many awards and accolades at a city, state and national level for their educational advancements also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of sports and curricular activities under the affiliating university.
The student of this department received and awarded by Gold Medal for the candidate who secures highest marks in the subject “Advertising” M.A. in Journalism degree examination. Also, awarded by the leading media houses.
The Department of Media Studies offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Master of Arts (M.A.) in Media and Communication Studies. It also offers Ph.D. courses.
The department also derived strength from its collaboration with the School of Journalism, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, U.S.A.
University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the affiliating University and various other examinations are held in the college premises.
The department has its own selection process unlike other colleges under the University. The department has an online application process where prospective applicants are expected to fill in their interests and academic achievements.
Candidates who have passed the bachelor’s degree with 50 percent of marks in the aggregate of all the examinations of the degree in the optional subjects of Journalism shall be eligible for admission to Journalism candidates.
Applications are open for Choice Based Credit System for the first cum first courses.
