Department of Hindi-University of Kerala was established in 1990 at the Kariavattom Campus of the University of Kerala with Dr.N.Ravindranath as the first professor and head.

It was established with the aim of higher studies and advanced research in Hindi Language and Literature and also for the purpose of extension of the Language.

The aim of large scale corpus development, translation and language teaching tools as well as large scale translation works of literary creations of eminent writers from Malayalam to Hindi and vice-versa.

As part of development and functioning of the centre it has been proposed to start a diploma course in translation named “diploma in translation studies” incorporating all the latest technological developments in the field of translation.
