Darjeeling Govt. College (DGC), Darjeeling was established in 1948.

Darjeeling Government College as it stands today since 5th August, 1948, has traversed a long way in serving the community. Darjeeling is very fortunate to have a government college of this stature and potentiality in this district town. The college is situated at the foot-hills of the eastern sub-Himalayan region at an altitude of 2134 meters. It stands on the Leblong Cart Road near the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. At the place where the college stands today in its full stature, previously stood St. Michael's School.

This is a co- education college. As the name suggests, the College is fully funded by the Government.

The objective of the college is to give its pupils a congenial atmosphere of learning, by taking individual care of each student and building up an intimate relationship between the teachers and the taught.

The college has delivered the need for higher education to a vast section of the under-privileged society through the unquestioned commitment of teachers and staffs. Besides undergraduate courses in liberal arts, commerce and science, it also offers post-graduate courses. The college has state-of-the-art technologies and infrastructure.

The college is affiliated to North Bengal University, established in 1962 with a goal to disseminate knowledge to fulfill growing socio-economic and technical manpower needs in the six North Bengal districts and the neighboring state of Sikkim. The University was established by Act of the Legislature of West Bengal in 1962. This is a state university situated near Siliguri in Darjeeling district.
