Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur was established in 1978. Its affiliated to Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishwavidyalaya.

The College of Agriculture (established in May, 1966) formed the nucleus of new farm University. It is an ISO 9001:2008 certified institution.

Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (renamed as Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya in June, 2001) was established on 1st November, 1978.The College of Agriculture (established in May, 1966) formed the nucleus of the new farm University. It is ICAR accredited and ISO 9001:2015 certified institution. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research has ranked this University at eleventh place among all farm universities of the country.

The University has  mandate for making provision for imparting education in agriculture and other allied branches , furthering the advancement of learning, research and undertaking extension of such branches, especially to the rural population of Himachal Pradesh.

Over the years, this University has contributed significantly in transforming the farm scenario of Himachal Pradesh. It has developed human resources, varieties and technologies and transferred these to farming community enabling the State to receive the “Krishikarman award” of Govt. of India four times in row for food grain production among small states of the country. Today, the State has earned its name for hill agricultural diversification and the farming community has imposed its faith in the University.

The University is situated at Palampur at an elevation of 1250 metres. It is near Pathankot railhead (further connected with a meter gauge train to Palampur) and is well connected from all important places of the country by road (NH20) and air (Kangra airport is arount 50 Kms). Good number of buses are available to Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla, etc.

MANDATE

HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

To Impart training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the fields of Agriculture, Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Home Sciences and Basic Sciences so as to make available manpower in these fields to man various positions in the state and at national / international level.

RESEARCH

To undertake location specific research in fundamental and applied aspects of crop improvement, natural resource management, plant protection, animal health, animal production and livestock product technologu, home sciences and such basic sciences which help in the growth and development of various disciplines of agriculture and animal husbandry.

To undertake socio-economic studies on various aspects of research and development so as to advise the policy makers in these fields in devising their policies.

EXTENSION EDUCATION

To coordinate, plan, execute and monitor various extension education programmes for the benefit of field officers in these fields so as to update their knowledge.

To organize trainings to farmers, farm women, orchardists, animal keepers, schoool drop outs, ex-servicemen etc. on various aspects of agriculture as well as vocational training on agriculture based occupations.

To tender referral services in the fields of soil, plant and animal health.

To Publish farm literature, prepare audio and video cassettes and ensure their sale / distribution among stake holders and to organise kisan melas, kisan divas, fields days and exhibitions at the University, district, state and national levels so as to project the activities and achievements of the university among the farmers and general public.
