Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta was established on 1st August 1952 by the Honorable Raja Pramukh of Travancore - Cochin, H.E. (late) Sri. Chithira Thirunal Raja Raja Varma.

It is one of the premier minority institutions under the Malankara Orthodox Churches Colleges and established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 30th June 1996 under Act, 1956.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade - (CGPA Score 3.60 on a 4 Point Scale in 3rd Cycle) on 29th March 2016.

It is a co-educational college, providing regular courses at primarily the higher secondary and undergraduate levels which are located in a rural part of a Makkankunnu played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government. The student's admission is done as per the Admission Criteria prescribed by the affiliating university.

The college has awarded as the best college by the affiliating university and also a number of awards in publication, offering scholarship & also awarded by the different society.

The college offers 13 UG courses, 14 PG courses, and 1 M.Phil course. 7 departments are approved research centres of M.G. University. UG courses are under Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS) and PG courses are under Credit and Semester System (CSS) of M.G. University.

In the final year of UG courses, students can choose an open course of their predilection. Our institution offers 10 different open courses which are basically job oriented. As suggested in the previous accreditation report, the college has taken the keen initiative in starting new job oriented courses.

Taking into consideration the growing demand for Commerce courses, B.Com with Finance and Taxation, B.Com with computer application and two streams of M.Com are offered. In addition to this, courses with more job opportunities such as MTA and BCA have also been newly introduced in the year 2014-15.

M.Phil in Zoology also had begun. Catholicate college is one among only 3 colleges in M.G. University where sanction has been accorded for M.Phil outside the University department. Sanction has been accorded by the University for starting MBA and MCA courses, for which AICTE approval is awaited.

Catholicate College is one of the approved centres of Kerala Government’s Computer skill oriented studies, RUTRONIX which offers PG and Diploma courses in computing.

In addition to this, the college runs Catholicate Institute of Computer and Multimedia Studies (CICMS) offering various certificate and diploma courses in computing. The college has an approved study centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi where 29 courses including MBA are offered and 818 students presently pursue their studies at the centre.
