Carmel College for Women, South Goa was established on 4th June 1964. It is one of the premier institutions to impart & provide a platform for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the path of progress.

The college is affiliated to Goa University, North Goa and recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) of the Act, 1956. It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade.

Carmel College of Arts, Science, and Commerce for Women is run by the Apostolic Carmel Congregation of Sisters. The Apostolic Carmel is solely an Indian Congregation not funded by any organization outside the country, industrial or corporate house. All funds not generated via Government aid or support comes from the salaries earned by the Sisters who serve as faculty.

As a rural women’s institution of higher learning, the Carmel College student body comprises largely of first generation learners. Their needs, motivations and aspirations do not necessarily meet those of an institution that aims to achieve the status of a Centre of Excellence as this benchmarking at the present time is standardized largely on up-market urban criteria.

Also, in an affiliated system like ours, curriculum design, innovation and creativity cannot be implemented according to our needs and aspirations. At the FY BA/BSc/ B.Com level we admit students, without discrimination on the basis of marks and achievements, from our localcommunity. Here they become young adults and responsible citizens with a strong set of values and sense of self confidence.

Carmel College has always emphasised the all-round development of young women. Towards this end, participation in activities and events including sports was actively encouraged. Elocution, quizzes, conferences, seminars and the like got participation, with little need for prodding. The orator contest was a hotly-contested annual affair with newcomers competing with old hands to win the attractive trophy and enviable title instituted by Dr.

Jerry Rodricks who was an actor and public speaker in his own right.

We are proud of our ex-students who are working as teachers at all levels of education, in government, in financial services, Nationalized and Private Sector Banks and in National and Global organizations like IMRB, BSC, NSC, IDBI, NIO, INS, CCMB, Gulf News, Zenith computers, The Indian Express, Centre for studies of developing societies in Asia and South – East Asia, New Delhi. Other than Goa University, our students have pursued further studies at St. Xavier’s Institute of Communication, Mumbai; Edinburgh University, UK; Mumbai University, Oxford University; other institutions of higher learning in the UK, US and Australia. We are as proud of the large number of our students who are home makers.

They are in fact, the solid foundation of the strong family bonds, traditions and cultural mores which are the hallmark of the socio cultural milieu of South Goa. The Management is deeply committed to the founding spirit of the institution "Educate a woman and you educate a family’". At the end of our Golden Jubilee Year, it is this endeavour that spurs us on, even as we aspire to become a Centre of Excellence according to UGC criteria.

In the month of May 2015 the college has received official approval for a Research Cell in Zoology. Collaborate closely with the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industries (GCCI) and Centre for Environmental Education (CEE). The college has also an ISO 9001-2008 certified Institution.

Carmel College was the first college in Goa to be re-accredited by NAAC for the second cycle; to begin Arts, Science and Commerce; to have M.Com in both Accounts and Management specializations, to publish a multidisciplinary peer reviewed research journal.

In 2009, we were pioneers in making free wi-fi facilities available to all students and staff on campus, until the mass use of smart phones rendered our wi-fi accessibility deficient.

In the past years, the college has undertaken to strengthen this on a war footing by installing UTP CAT 6 cabling, manageable smart L2 switches, fiber cable support and a firewall. We are the only non-professional college in Goa to have hostel facilities and to be recognized as a centre for the conduct of Refresher Courses in experimental physics.
