Bharata Mata College (BMC), Kochi (Dist. Ernakulam) was established on 16th June 1965 by Joseph Parecattil under the aegis of Bharata Mata Educational Trust (R) of the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly.
It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.
The college is affiliated with the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) in 1976 under Act, 1956.
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade - (CGPA Score 3.08 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 5th May 2014.
The college is located in Thrikkakara, Kerala’s mythological capital, facing the Seaport-Airport Road. Situated at a distance of just 12 Kms from the city of Kochi, it is easily accessible from Judgemukku on Edappally-Muvattupuzha Road in the North, and from NGO Quarters and Palli stop on the Kakkanad -Ernakulam Road in the South, in addition to the BMC bus stop on the Seaport-Airport Road.
The main campus also houses three research centers in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Commerce and operates as the off-campus centre for the School of Distance Education of the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
It is a co-education religious minority college, providing regular courses at primarily the higher secondary and undergraduate levels which are located in a semi-urban part of Kochi played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
More than 65% of the student community are girls. Started in 1965 as a junior college with five Pre-degree batches, the college today boasts of being the first-grade college with 17 undergraduate and 4 post-graduate programmes, 2 professional courses, 3 research centres and an off-campus centre.
The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government.
The student's admission is done as per the Admission Criteria prescribed by the affiliating university.
The college has awarded as the best college by the affiliating university and also a number of awards in publication, offering scholarship & also awarded by the different society.
The community comprises around 2500 students, nearly 121 teachers and about 36 members of the non-teaching staff. The dedication of the management and the community, combined with excellent infrastructural and teaching facilities help maintain high Standards in curricular and co-curricular spheres of the institution.
At present, the college offers three years undergraduate two years courses postgraduate courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, & Management streams with various specializations under the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. It also offers Doctorate & Add-On Certificate courses.
All the Under-Graduate Courses are envisaged and implemented as per University Choice Based Credit Semester System (CBCSS).
For passing the degree programme, a student should obtain a minimum of 120 credits of which 38 credits shall be from Common Courses, 78 credits from Core and Complementary Courses and 4 credits from the Open Courses.
The college also has a Contact Centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi to offer UG, PG, Diploma, Post Graduate Diploma & Add-On Certificate Courses through distance mode.
