Besant Theosophical College, Chennai was established in 1915.
It is affiliated to Madras University.
The college was re-affiliated to Madras University and continued for almost 30 years. After separation of Andhra State & Madras State, the college was initially affilated to Andhra University (1954 - 1956) and then to Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati.
The event will always be remembered as a land mark in the history of Rayalaseema as the College was at that time, the only institution to cater to the needs of higher education in this region.
Besant Theosophical College also brought the people of the area into closer contact with international programs for the propagation of the culture and spiritual ideals of the Theosophical society and also the National movement for political liberation, the under the inspiration of Dr. Annie Besant.
Besant Theosophical College which became a centre of nationalist activities was obliged to dissociate itself from the Madras University and became part of the newly organized National University of which Dr. Rabindranath Tagore was the Chancellor.
Besant Theosophical College was during 1919 Tagore visited the College and stayed in the College for a few weeks. Besant Theosophical College is affiliated to D.O.T.E. Govt. of Tamilnadu.
