Balarampur College, Purulia was established in 1985. It is affiliated to University of Burdwan.

To provide higher education in the rural area of Purulia District. The area was dominated mostly by scheduled castes and other backward communities.

The aim of the college is to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need in this era of information and teaching. The College is a grant in aid institution of West Bengal Govt.

The College offers under-graduate courses in Arts, Science and commerce stream. The college is well equipped with all modern facilities. The College comes under the University of Burdwan.

This University was started in 1960 with Sukumar Sen as its first Vice-chancellor. It occupies an exalted place amongst the universities of West Bengal.

It has been awarded with 4 star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to acknowledge the contribution of Burdwan University in the educational development of the state. 

Balarampur College is situated at the heart of a tribal belt in the southern part of Purulia and it is a co-educational institution.

It was established in the year 1985 (vide G.O. No. 1289 Edn.(Cs) dt.19.9.85) to impart education at Degree Level. It started Tow- Year Degree Arts General Course from the Session 1985- 86 with the affiliation to the University of Burdwan. Since then the college has been running smoothly with nearly 2000 (two thousand) students.

Since 2010,it has been running under the S.K.B.University, Purulia.

Now there are three streams-Arts, Science & Commerce with Honours and General Courses. The College is going on with object of upliftment of this backward area and betterment of students. In 2010, the College has been recognized under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the U.G.C.Act,1956. So, it has been receiving Central assistance in terms of the rules framed under Section 12(B)of the U.G.C.Act, 1956.
