B.J.B. Autonomous College, Bhubaneswar was also known as a Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar (Autonomous) College, Bhubaneswar was established on 16th July 1957 as a Science College and later it was renamed in memory of one of the greatest freedom fighters of Odisha - Buxi Jagabanadhu Bidyadhar Bhramarbar Ray Mohapatra.

The college is managed by the trust Heritage Vision Education Trust, Bhubaneswar, Prativa Education Trust, Bhubaneswar and YOURS Trust, Bhubaneswar.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with the Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1998 under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 1st January 1972 under Act, 1956.

It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.86 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 2nd December 2016

It is a co-educational self-financing Institute, providing regular courses at primarily the higher secondary and undergraduate levels which are located in a rural part of a Bhubaneswar played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar Autonomous College, which is a government college, started functioning as “Science College, Bhubaneswar” in the year 1957 with provision for the teaching of Intermediate Science it was affiliated to Utkal University.

Later, in the same year, it was named after the great freedom fighter Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar Bhramarabara Ray Mohapatra an immortal patriot with undaunted courage, deep humanism & unflinching loyalty to the motherland.

The college started in the present premises humbly in 1960 with merely 32 students. Popularly known as BJB College, it has been an academic focal point and a dream destination for intellectual pursuit not only for the students of Odisha but also for those of the neighboring states like West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh.

In the meanwhile, the college has completed its glorious 58 years of successful journey. The college has achieved important milestones like conferment of Lead College status by Government of Odisha in 1994, Autonomous College status by the UGC on 1st October 1999 and recognition as a "College with Potential for Excellence (CPE)" on 1st January 1998.

At UG level, the college imparts Honors teaching in a wide range of subjects like Anthropology, English, Oriya, Hindi, Sanskrit, Education, History, Economics, Political Science, Philosophy, Sociology, Mathematics, Geography Accountancy, Management, Physics, psychology, Chemistry, Botany, statistics, Zoology, Computer Science, and Biotechnology.

There is substantial flexibility in choosing the minor/major electives in all disciplines. It imparts P.G. courses in Social Works, Journalism and Mass Communication, Business Administration, Finances Control, Personnel Management & Industrial Relations, Bio-Informatics & Electronics & Telecommunications in self-financing mode.

The college fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government. The student's admission is done as per the Admission Criteria prescribed by the affiliating university.

The college has awarded as the best college by the affiliating university and also a number of awards in publication, offering scholarship & also awarded by the different society.

At present, the college offers two years intermediate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams with various specializations under Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha.

The college also offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams with various specializations under Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. Students should have to choose one honor (core) subject with two or more as subsidiary (elective) subjects for the specific undergraduate streams.

Apart from this, Self-Financing Courses have been introduced with the approval of the Government such as Master in Social Work, B.Sc with Honors in Biotechnology and Computer Science as well as Diploma in Medicinal Plant Management.

The college also has a Contact Centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi to offer UG, PG, & Add-On Certificate courses.
