Assam University, School of Environmental Science, Silchar was established in 1995.

It is affiliated to Assam University.

The courses are offered with respective departments. The master degree programme in the department started in July 1996. Ph.D. and M.Phil. programs were launched subsequently in 1998 and 1999, respectively.

Ongoing researches in the department include areas like Natural Resource Management and Biodiversity Conservation, Microbial Ecology, Rivers, Wetlands, Forests and Agro Eco System, Insect Ecology & Algal Ecology.

Over the years, the department has established collaboration with national level institute like Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun Institute of genomics and integrative biology.
