Arya Vidyapeeth College, Kamrup was established on 29th July, 1958. It is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade.

It is situated in the heart of Guwahati city, is one of the premier institutions of higher learning in not only Assam but the whole of North East India. It is the most prominent member in the family of Arya Vidyapeeth - a chain educational instituions starting from primary level to postgraduate level that was born out of the missionary zeal and relentless efforts on the part of a team of visionaries, the prominent worker being Late Giridhar Sarma.

The untiring efforts, missionary zeal and rare organisational ability of Giridhar Sarma helped the college grow into a throbbing centre of academic excellence in the teeth of many odds on the way.

Arya Vidyapeeth College can be called the dream child of Giridhar Sarma, an academician and a litterateur of repute. The college has been the first amongst all the grants-in-aid colleges of Assam to launch post graduate courses in Mathematics as well as Honours in Economics.

The college started COSIP and COHSIP Programmes way back in 1974. Perhaps no other GIA college in Assam had a UGC sponsored Non-Resident Student Centre, a Workshop, and a Health Centre when they were operational in Arya Vidyapeeth College.

The college has its own Anthem which is a unique one motivating all the stake holders of the college to work for the greater interest of the society. Today the college provides major courses altogether in twenty subjects in Arts, Science and Commerce stream. Keeping in mind the global dynamics.

The college has been successfully running many self sustainable courses in Computer for the last eight years. Other courses like a certificate course in Human Rights, certificate and diploma courses in Bioinformatics are also experiencing high success.

The Government of India has identified the college as a Biotechnology Hub too. Recently the College received a grant from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India for further development of infrastructure of science departments.

Arya Vidyapeeth College has been identified by the University Grants Commission as an institution having potential for excellence. The CPE (College with Potential for Excellence) tag along with a grant will surely help the institution to scale greater heights. As part of the ongoing CPE scheme several projects have been initiated both for institutional as well as community development.

As on today, Arya Vidyapeeth College is perhaps one of the most successful colleges in Assam because we have been able to elevate the output standard of the passing out students at an exponentially higher stratum than their input level.

The college is clearly reflected in the pass percentage data of the college and that of the Guwahati University. The teaching faculty of the college has over the years thirst for excellence triggered off since the beginning, one can see our faculty members engaged in many research projects, authoring books and research papers of national and international standards regularly.

The college has developed many national and international linkages in the academic front. Academicians / Scientists from different parts of the country as well as abroad have visited the institution for research purpose as well as student interaction.

Prestigious awards like the Padmashree Soviet Land Nehru Sahitya Academy and Kathaand Assam Sahitya Sabhareceived by our faculty members reflect the reality.

There are even records of this colleague acting as a visiting faculty in Universities abroad. Innumerable students have enrolled in this college with high hopes and aspirations. They have returned not only academically and mentally satiated but also carried home laurels in various fields of science, education, political affairs, policy making , cultural and literature or sports.

Arya Vidyapeeth has been the facilitator in the emergence of luminaries and icons of national and international stature. There may be a few places in the whole country where an alumnus of this institution may not be found. Many of them have brought glories by shining in overseas too.

The name of the college is suggestive of the spirit and culture of the institution. The word Arya in the context of the college, implies a person who sticks to his rightful and legitimate duty by practicing what he should do and by abstaining from doing what one is not expected to do thereby elevating him to a state of higher civilised order.

This makes Arya Vidyapeeth stand out as the perihelion, emitting its radiance and beckoning the student community to be a part of this glorious institution and stride along with it in its further strive for excellence.
