Teachers day is around the corner! Swami Vivekananda was one of the best teachers of his era. Every year on 12 January, India celebrates National Youth Day or Yuva Divas to commemorate the birth Anniversary of scholar Swami Vivekananda who was a social reformer, philosopher and great thinker. Every year the government celebrates this day by following a theme related to education. The theme for 2018 was 'Sankalp Se Siddhi' meaning, 'Fruit of adhering to promise'
Swami Vivekananda graduated from the Presidency College Calcutta. He did his Fine Arts and completed Bachelor of Arts in 1885. Although he was one among the learned man of the era, his marks did not reflect his intelligence. It is reported that Vivekananda secured only 56 out of 100 in his F.A. and B. A. Examinations with a 45 percent marks in psychology.
This stats reveals an important perspective about education. It was not that Vivekananda was any less intellectual. But his marks in exams only reveals his distrust in the then education system. Following this, Vivekananda himself has remarked and had a vision of a revamped education system in India.
Here are some of Swami Vivekananda's best quotes on education that reveals his progressive vision for the nation even centuries ago:

Educate and raise the masses, and thus alone a nation is possible.
Education has yet to be in the world, and civilisation - civilisation has begun nowhere yet.
If education is identical with information, the libraries are the greatest sages in the world, and encyclopedias are the Rishis.
If the mountain does not come to Mohammed, Mohammed must go to the mountain. If the poor cannot come to education, education must reach them at the plough, in the factory, everywhere.
The only way to bring about the levelling of caste is to appropriate the culture, the education which is the strength of the higher castes.
We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one's own feet.
I look upon religion as the innermost core of education.
Education is not filling the mind with a lot of facts. Perfecting the instrument and getting complete mastery of my own mind is the ideal education
