Law is the study of a system of rules according to which a particular community or country is regulated and the actions for which penalties are imposed on the members. Students who opt for studying law have to study various subjects like sociology, legal history, economic analysis, and philosophy.

Established in 1891 as Madras Law College, later, in 1990, Govt. of Tamil Nadu renamed the college as Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College in commemoration of the birth centenary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Established in 2002, Government Law College, Chengalpattu is one of seven government law colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu and it is administered by Tamil Nadu's Department of Legal Studies.
