Amazon Jobs News: Even as the COVID-struck year nears an end impacting scores of livelihoods and businesses - micro, small, medium and large enterprises alike, Amazon - an American e-commerce company has emerged stronger as a key player in the service and consumer market, especially when it comes to hiring newer employees to be added to its existing workforce.

Amazon Hiring 2.8K Workers Per Day

The e-commerce giant is on an employing spree, currently engaging more than 1.2 million people globally, making the Amazon hiring 2,800 workers everyday on an average since July 2020. With it, Amazon has emerged a as bringer of livelihood to many, both in overseas as well as India amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw several companies resorting to layoffs and pay cuts.

Amazon To Surpass Walmart

At the current rate of employee engagement, which is a 50% growth from the previous year after it added nearly 4,27,300 personnel to its workforce in the first 10 months of 2020, Amazon is likely to surpass Walmart to become the world's largest private sector employer in a span of just two years.

In other words, Amazon's employee growth outruns Walmart's 2.3 lakh staff hiring record which it had achieved in a single year twenty years ago. Amazon's workforce was less than 6.5 lakh two years ago as the company put brakes on hiring to focus on making profits. The hiring process, however, picked up pace a year ago after Amazon introduced one-day shipping in the US that required more warehouses and personnel to pick, pack and sort packages.

At the onset of the COVID-pandemic, the American multinational hired 1,75,000 temporary workers offering them additional pay of $2 an hour and increased OT pay. Moving further, it offered full-time roles from seasonal to 70% of the 1.75 lakh workforce it had hired during the outbreak to meet the surge in e-Commerce demand across the United States.

Amazon's Hiring Spots

Amazon's hiring is centered around its headquarters in Seattle and in countries like India and Italy. The most frequent jobs in Amazon involve warehouse workers, who serve as delivery drivers alongside software engineers and hardware specialists required for the purpose of cloud computing, streaming entertainment, and other services which have boomed in the pandemic.

Recently Amazon India, had called for 50,000 job vacancies in its fulfillment and delivery network, to meet the surge in e-commerce demand post-lockdown, although the roles offered are seasonal and contractual determined by the demand chain.

With Amazon's hiring binge, which got accelerated at the onset and during the Covid-19 pandemic, its workforce now is nearing the entire population of Dallas. In fact, Amazon is one of the fewer companies with open jobs throughout the year notwithstanding the pandemic.

"Offering jobs with industry-leading pay and great health care, including to entry-level and frontline employees, is even more meaningful in a time like this," Jeff Bezos, CEO Amazon said.

Amazon holds the largest share of e-commerce, with sales expected to grow by as much as 30% over last year's holiday season, as per the National Retail Federation.
