The Chinese invented some of the most important objects in the world. They have tea, silk, gunpowder, kites, fireworks and a long list that seems never ending. Pioneers of innovations, this grand civilization expended a lot of their time into a contribution that has been helping the world since forever now.

Paper is a thin material that is formed by pressing fibers obtained from the pulp of natural sources like wood, and drying them.

Paper is used for many purposes, exclusively for writing and printing, along with which, it is used for cleaning, artwork and packaging and construction. In short, it has been a super important object for daily use.

 Paper-Pulp Engineering: Career Opportunities

We have to acknowledge the industry behind such a feat. Although the Chinese and Egyptians started off the industrial production and use of paper, it has grown into a billion dollar industry as of today thanks to Paper and Pulp Engineering.

What is Paper Engineering?

Paper Engineering is the area of engineering that deals converting raw materials into paper products. It deals with the thermal, chemical and biochemical process that are used to design and produce the paper.

The processes result in the making of paper, cardboard, and other paper oriented materials and have a close relation with the forestry department, recycling of paper and paper-based waste material and mass production of paper for mass media channels like newspaper and magazines.
The field of paper engineering takes up various methods for the generating paper from raw materials.

These include-

Mechanical Pulping - Using mechanical instruments to grind and refine the pulp and producing the paper.

Chemical Pulping - Chemically disbanding 'Lignins' which are organic polymers which help in creating cell walls in wood and bark, and thereafter getting the pulp which is used to create durable paper materials.

Pulp Processing - The pulp that is obtained is further rendered into a mesh sort of form, which is further pressed with extreme pressure resulting in removing of all the water content.

Finishing -The resulting paper is then coated with a very tiny amount of china clay to give a finishing touch to the surface, after which it is modified according to the needed sizes.

What does a paper engineer do?

A Paper-Pulp Engineer is an expert who studies the processes of manufacture of paper, pulp and also other byproducts that can be generated from the pulp.

The job revolves around the development of various procedures and applications which can be put into use for the recycling of the waste paper and other materials into useful products.

Their job also involves the application of knowledge of the physical sciences which includes, and life physics and chemistry and life sciences (biology and biochemistry) into practical use. Though the paper and pulp industry go hand in hand, they are carried out in separate processes.

How to become a Paper Engineer?

A career in paper and pulp engineering requires basic knowledge in physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics. An aspirant must select the science stream with all the above-mentioned subjects and get 50% marks in each for their XII board examination.

You must then apply for an undergraduate program, which can be bachelors in engineering. Students aspiring to avail their degree from IIT and NIT must apply for JEE and get through JEE Mains.

Following the bachelors program, you can go for a masters program in engineering with paper engineering as a specialization. Those who are interested in continuing their studies and want o focus on research can follow up to get a post-doctoral degree.

You can look for jobs, right after your bachelors or masters, but the level of your job and salary will depend on your qualification and experience.

What are the Job Opportunities in Paper Engineering?

With new technology and a need for specific needs, the field of paper and chemical engineering is seen to be useful in the manufacturing of a wide variety of products.

This industry's scope involves manufacturing of organic and agrochemicals (fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides), fragrances and flavors, food, feed, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, chemicals, polymers and power from biological materials. A lot of emphasis is also been given on recycling technologies.

The remuneration in Paper- Pulp Engineering

A paper engineer with a master degree holders can earn Rs.15, 000 to Rs.20, 000 per month at starting the level. The Paper and Pulp Engineers or Scientists with an experience of 5 years can get salary of
Rs.35, 000 - RS.40, 000 per month.

Initial salaries for graduates with a Paper Science and Engineering degree are among the highest for any New York City State graduate. The recent average offer was $68,000/year, with a range of $64,000 to $72,000. The salaries increase in time with better experience, skill, and knowledge.
