The Chandigarh Welfare Trust (CWT) and the Chandigarh administration will collaborate on continual improvement in the Chandigarh school education sector. Satnam Singh Sandhu, founder of Chandigarh Welfare Trust and Chancellor of Chandigarh University (CU), announced this during the first-ever Chandigarh Schools Excellence Awards (CSEA) held at the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration (MGSIPA) in Sector 26, Chandigarh.

The awards were established to recognize and acknowledge the work of educational institutions and faculty members, as well as to reflect on methods to propel Chandigarh to the forefront of school education. The event was organized on Saturday at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre in Sector 26, Chandigarh, and the principal guest was Punjab governor and UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit. CWT founder and Chancellor Chandigarh University Satnam Singh Sandhu, director of school education Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar, and District Education Officer (DEO) Bindu Arora were among the dignitaries in attendance.

The first edition of the Chandigarh Schools Excellence Awards received a massive response, with over 200 schools from throughout Chandigarh taking part. A total of 237 prizes were given out over 21 categories, including 4 categories for principals, 7 categories for teachers, and 10 categories for schools. Satnam Singh Sandhu, speaking on the occasion, stated that Chandigarh has always been a model city in the country in terms of education. "Due to the high quality of education, the city has produced many distinguished personalities in various fields, including two prime ministers, chief justices, and others." "It is the only city in India where the quality of education in government schools is comparable to that of private schools," Satnam Singh Sandhu stated.

Regarding the latest results of classes 10 and 12 announced by CBSE on Friday, Satnam Singh Sandhu said that although Chandigarh has performed very well in the region, there are still some areas that need improvement. "The results show a decrease in the pass percentage in both classes 10 and 12." According to CBSE data, the pass percentage for Class 12 has decreased this year compared to 2022. Similarly, the pass rate for class 10 has decreased this year," Satnam Singh Sandhu remarked. Furthermore, Satnam Singh Sandhu stated that Chandigarh is currently ranked second in the Performance Grading Index 2020-21, while the city was ranked first in the country in PGI Rankings in 2017-18 and 2018-19. "Even though Chandigarh improved its PGI Index 2020-21 scores from 912 to 927, we fell to second place."

Furthermore, we will engage with the UT administration to enhance the score on some categories in the PGI ranking in order to reclaim the #1 spot in PGI for Chandigarh. "We must work on parameters such as improving access to education, providing equity, and implementing governance processes, which includes the use of digital technology," Satnam Singh Sandhu stated. On the occasion, Satnam Singh Sandhu launched two new certificate programs for school principals and teachers to convey cutting-edge teaching-learning skills. A leadership and training course for principals will be offered, as will a diploma course for teachers.

"The two courses will be offered free of cost by Chandigarh University to principals and teachers to improve their skills and impart new-age teaching-learning pedagogy," Satnam Singh Sandhu said, adding that Chandigarh University will also offer scholarships to UT Chandigarh school teachers to pursue higher education, particularly Ph.D. and research. Banwarilal Purohit, Punjab governor, and UT administrator, complimented the Chandigarh Welfare Trust (CWT) on the establishment of the Chandigarh School's Excellence Awards, which he stated will aid in recognizing the best schools, teachers, and principals in UT Chandigarh. He also applauded the CWT and CU for establishing two certificate courses to help city school teachers and principals improve their skills.

Banwarilal Purohit also congratulated all award recipients, calling it a celebration of the remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication displayed by these outstanding individuals and educational institutions from the public and private sectors of UT in Chandigarh. "We should be proud of our great culture," remarked Banwarilal Purohit. Since the time of the Vedas, the value and importance of education have been recognized throughout India. Respect for teachers is ingrained in our diverse culture.

Chandigarh University is an NAAC A+ rated university with a QS World Ranking. This autonomous educational institution is certified by the UGC and is located in the state of Punjab, near Chandigarh.
