33rd Dr. K.C.G. Verghese Memorial Inter-Institutional Basketball Tournament

The Directorate of Sports at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS) organised the 33rd Dr. KCG Verghese Memorial Inter-Institutional Basketball Tournament for Men and Women at the Michael Jordan Basketball Court, Bay Range Campus between 9-11 March 2024.

The Inter-Institutional basketball tournament is instituted in memory of the Founder Chairman Dr. KCG Verghese, which fosters the spirit of sportsmanship, team-work and community building among participating universities and at the same time, paves the way for emerging stars of basketball in the region. A total of 18 Top University teams from Chennai, comprising 12 Men's teams and 6 Women's teams battled out on the court, vying for the coveted championship trophy.

Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Chancellor, congratulated the teams on their impressive performance. Mr. Ashok Verghese, Pro Chancellor, wished the participating teams and applauded the stellar talents, resilience and efforts of the players and the unwavering support provided by the coaches and the Institution staff in ensuring outstanding performances on the court.

The Valedictory Ceremony for the event was graced by Mr. S. Baskar, Senior Head Coach of Indian Women's Basketball Team as the Chief Guest; Ms. T. Dharshini, International Basketball Player and Alumnus of HITS as Special Guest in the presence of Dr. S.N. Sridhara, Vice Chancellor; Mr. Abraham Varghese, Sports Advisor; Dr. J. David Mathew, Dean of Sports and Dr. K.S. Shaji, Dean of Student Affairs along with other faculty members of the Institution.

Mr. S. Baskar, the Chief Guest of the event motivated the players by talking about his life experiences and his love for the sport. He applauded the wonderful performance of all the participating teams and the stars of the contests.

Hindustan Alumnus, Ms. T. Dharshini, the Special Guest for the event said that she was happy and reminisced about her time on the campus and talked about how proud she was to visit the HITS family once again. In her address she said how the sport gave her the impetus to succeed in her career and how she excelled as a Ticket Examiner at Southern Railways.

The Men's and Women's teams winners were awarded Rs. 20,000/- and the runners received a cash prize of Rs 15,000/- The 3rd and 4th place winners won a cash award of Rs. 10,000/- and Rs 7,000/- respectively.

  • Winners - Sathyabama University
  • Runners - Hindustan University
  • Third Place - Jeppiaar University
  • Fourth Place - SSN University

Mr. R. Prabhu from Sathyabama University was awarded the most promising player of the tournament and Mr. V. Thejesh from Hindustan University was awarded the most valuable player of the tournament with the cash award of Rs. 2,000/- each in the Men's Category.

  • Runners - Hindustan University
  • Third Place - SRM Valliammai Engineering College
  • Fourth Place - Vels University

Ms. Shivani from SRM Valliammai Engineering College was awarded the most promising player of the tournament and Ms. S. Harithra from Hindustan University was awarded the most valuable player of the tournament with the cash award of Rs. 2,000/- each in the women's Category.
