The world of education has always been dynamic, presenting new challenges and opportunities for students across all fields. One of the more recent changes to come about is the modification in the CBSE board accountancy exam format, which is expected to be implemented by 2024. This change, though targeted at improving the learning process, may pose significant implications for commerce students in India.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a revamp of the exam format for Class 12 Accountancy paper. Instead of the existing 80% weightage for theory and 20% weightage for practical, the 2024 board examination will now have a 70-30 format. This alteration is a part of the CBSE's competency-based education project which aims to emphasize more on understanding, analytical skills and application of knowledge rather than rote-learning. Previously, the response booklets contained printed formats at the end to address a few specific questions. On the last 7-8 pages of the accounting answer sheets, there were already printed tables in case any question required a reference to reach a solution point.
Implications for Commerce Students
The shift in the exam format will impact commerce students, especially those who intend to pursue the Commerce stream in Class 11 and 12. Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the change emphasizes on encouraging critical thinking and analytical skills of students. While revision-oriented learning methods might take a backseat, newer teaching-learning practices focusing on application of concepts, problem-solving and case studies could be the new norm. Therefore, students might need to prepare differently and adapt to such pedagogical transitions.
Easing into the Transition
To ensure a smooth transition, CBSE plans to provide training and capacity-building opportunities for teachers as well. This is a commendable effort as teachers play a significant role in guiding students through their learning process. Interactive classrooms, enriched learning resources, and toolkits to assess practical knowledge are expected to be introduced. Schools across the country will take measures to adapt their teaching methodologies and resources in accordance with the new format.
