The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is poised to enhance its examination security by introducing facial recognition and AI-based CCTV surveillance to prevent cheating and impersonation, as reported by PTI. To this end, the UPSC has invited bids from experienced public sector undertakings to develop two advanced technological solutions: "Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication with facial recognition of candidates and QR code scanning of e-admit cards," and a "live AI-based CCTV surveillance service" for use during examinations.

Live AI-Based CCTV Surveillance Service
In an effort to ensure a secure examination process, the UPSC will deploy CCTV cameras and video surveillance systems equipped with recording and live broadcasting capabilities at all exam centers nationwide. This setup will facilitate real-time monitoring of candidates and exam personnel, thereby maintaining the integrity and security of the examination process.
The tender document specifies that the service provider must install an adequate number of high-quality color CCTV cameras in each examination venue. The AI-powered video surveillance system will generate instant alerts in specific cases, such as potential incidents of cheating, unfair practices, or invigilator absence, enabling swift action to uphold the examination's integrity.
1 CCTV Camera for Every 24 Candidates
According to the tender document, the UPSC requires one high-quality color CCTV camera for every 24 candidates at each examination venue. This measure aims to ensure comprehensive coverage and effective monitoring during exams.
This decision comes in the wake of controversies involving trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar. The UPSC has issued a notice to cancel her selection due to allegations of lying about visual and mental disabilities and faking her identity, including changing her parents' names, to clear the Civil Services entrance exam. Investigations are ongoing to verify several claims, including her physical disability and OBC (Other Backward Class) status.
The implementation of these advanced technologies reflects UPSC's commitment to maintaining a fair and transparent examination process. By leveraging facial recognition and AI-based surveillance, the commission aims to eliminate malpractices and ensure that only deserving candidates succeed in their exams.
