The National Testing Agency (NTA) has decided to conduct a fresh UGC NET June 2026 examination for English, Commerce and Sociology after an expert panel found multiple issues in the question papers. The re-test is scheduled to take place in September 2026. Candidates appearing for these three subjects will be allowed to take the examination again without paying any additional examination fee.

The decision follows complaints raised over the quality of the question papers conducted during the UGC NET June 2026 examination. NTA had conducted the test from June 22 to June 30, 2026, across 87 subjects for determining eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professor and admission to PhD programmes.
Following complaints regarding the English, Commerce and Sociology papers, NTA constituted an expert committee to examine the reported issues. The committee identified several factual, typographical and translation-related errors in the question papers.
The reported issues included misspelt names of prominent scholars, incorrect or distorted book titles, errors in question wording and grammatical mistakes. The committee also noted problems involving gender and number agreement, punctuation and the use of non-standard terms for established concepts.
The committee further observed that several questions had been repeated from previous examinations. Considering the extent of the errors, it recommended conducting the three examinations again rather than simply dropping disputed questions after the answer-key challenge process.
NTA has announced the following schedule for the re-conducted UGC NET papers:
| Subject | Date | Shift | Timing |
| English | September 9, 2026 | Shift 1 | 9 AM to 12 Noon |
| Commerce | September 9, 2026 | Shift 2 | 3 PM to 6 PM |
| Sociology | September 10, 2026 | Shift 1 | 9 AM to 12 Noon |
NTA has stated that details regarding the examination city, centre and admit card will be notified separately through its official websites.
Candidates appearing for the re-conducted English, Commerce or Sociology examination will not be required to pay an additional examination fee.
The re-examination is being conducted to ensure fairness and provide candidates with an opportunity to appear for an error-free examination after the issues identified in the original question papers.
The re-examination will be limited to English, Commerce and Sociology. NTA has clarified that the results for the remaining 84 subjects will be declared according to the existing schedule, following completion of the answer-key challenge process.
The agency has also stated that the re-examination of the three subjects will not delay JRF seat allocation or the issuance of e-certificates for candidates who qualify for Assistant Professor and PhD eligibility in the other 84 subjects.
For Assistant Professor eligibility, NTA has stated that the number of qualified candidates will be 6% of the candidates who appeared in the June 2026 examination or the re-test, whichever is higher.
For the three re-conducted subjects, subject-wise allocation will follow the provisions of the UGC NET Information Bulletin. NTA has also clarified that numbers already allocated will not be reduced after the re-examination.
Candidates appearing for the re-test should regularly check the official NTA website for updates regarding the examination city, centre details, admit card and other instructions.
