Tamil Nadu's Higher Education Minister, Govi Chezhiaan, has criticized Governor R N Ravi for interfering with the appointments of Vice Chancellors in state universities. He claimed this interference is detrimental to the functioning and health of these institutions. Chezhiaan suggested that Governor Ravi should focus more on securing central government funds for higher education, which have been significantly reduced, instead of hindering the state's efforts to fill these crucial academic positions.

Late Friday night, in a robust response to Governor Ravi's demand earlier that day for recalling the state's notification on the Vice Chancellor search panel, Chezhiaan emphasized the negative impact of the Governor's actions. The search panel in question was for filling the Vice Chancellor roles at Anna University, Bharathidasan University, and Periyar University. Ravi had insisted on including a nominee from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in this committee, a suggestion the Minister found unnecessary. Chezhiaan argued that the UGC's role is advisory and that the state is not obligated to follow its recommendations. He accused the Governor of creating unnecessary conflicts, acting against the interests of students, and having political motives behind his interventions.
"The health of the universities has been severely affected by the Governor's constant interference," Chezhiaan stated, expressing concern over the future of students due to these disruptions. He attributed these issues to Ravi's political motivations and his attempts to obscure the significant cuts in central funding to state universities. By playing politics, the Governor is not only affecting the administrative operations but also potentially harming the academic future of students, according to the Minister.
In his statement, Chezhiaan also announced that the state government plans to tackle this issue through legal means. He urged Governor Ravi to cease creating hurdles for the state government and allow the appointment of Vice Chancellors to proceed smoothly. This approach, he argued, would be in the best interests of the universities and their students, emphasizing the need for cooperation rather than conflict in improving Tamil Nadu's higher education landscape.
