In a significant move to strengthen sports education and improve student fitness, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department has directed all schools to conduct Physical Education (PE) classes compulsorily for students from Classes 6 to 12. Tamil Nadu Makes PE Classes Mandatory for Classes 6-12

The instructions were issued following a review meeting chaired by B Chandra Mohan, where the importance of regular physical education and sports participation in schools was emphasized. The department has instructed Chief Educational Officers (CEOs) and District Educational Officers (DEOs) to ensure that PE periods are conducted without interruption and are not replaced by other academic subjects.

According to education department officials, although PE classes are part of the school curriculum for Classes 6-12, there have been instances where teachers of other subjects use the allotted time for academic lessons. The government has clarified that such practices will not be permitted, as physical education is considered essential for students' overall development.

The department has further directed schools to organize special coaching sessions for students interested in sports and games. These coaching classes are expected to help identify and nurture young sporting talent, enabling students to participate in district, state, and national-level competitions.

Additionally, District Physical Education Inspectors have been asked to provide details of schools that have achieved notable success in state and national sports events. The initiative aims to recognize institutions that actively promote sports culture and encourage others to adopt similar practices.

Another important aspect of the directive is the assessment of school playgrounds. Authorities have been instructed to identify schools where sports grounds and playground facilities are underutilized. The government intends to ensure that available infrastructure is used effectively for physical activities, training programs, and sports competitions.

Education experts have welcomed the move, stating that regular physical activity contributes to better physical health, mental well-being, discipline, teamwork, and academic performance. In an era where screen time among children is increasing, structured PE classes can help students maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

The Tamil Nadu government's decision reflects a broader commitment to promoting sports and fitness in schools. By making PE classes mandatory and encouraging better utilization of playgrounds, the state aims to create a balanced educational environment that supports both academic excellence and physical development. This initiative is expected to benefit lakhs of students across Tamil Nadu and strengthen the foundation for future sporting achievements.
