The Smile International Film Festival for Children & Youth (SIFFCY) commenced its 11th edition in the national capital, marking its opening with the much-lauded Italian movie "The Tiger's Nest," featuring Sunny Pawar, renowned for his role in "Lion." This year's festival, inaugurated by Herve Delphin, the Ambassador of the European Union, showcases a diverse selection of over 150 films, including feature films, animations, short films, and documentaries from over 40 countries. The event, which is a partnership with the European Union (Delegation of the European Union to India), promises an extensive cinematic journey, concluding on Thursday.

At the opening ceremony held at Siri Fort Auditorium, Delphin highlighted the universal language of cinema and the cultural cinematic creativity shared between Europe and India. "Europe and India stand as two incredible hubs of cinematographic creativity and culture! The European Union is happy to partner with SIFFCY again this year with films from over 15 EU countries. Starting from Delhi this show will go around cities in India with top movies for youth that will leave a trail of Smiles in its wake," he stated. This sentiment underscores the festival's aim to foster a global appreciation of cinema among youth.
The festival, which runs in a hybrid mode across over 100 locations in India, has Poland as the country of honour and Italy as the focus country, highlighting a curated selection of Polish and Italian films for young audiences. Films like "Lampo" from Poland, "Doubles Match" from Taiwan, and "Bigman" from The Netherlands, among others from around the world like "Winners" from Germany and "Soaring Wings" from India, will be screened, providing a rich tapestry of global cinema.
Notably, the festival has attracted the participation of key international figures, including the Ambassadors of Finland, Lithuania, Georgia, and Ukraine to India, along with directors from the Polish Institute and Italian Cultural Centre in New Delhi, showcasing its international significance and the collaborative spirit of cinematic arts.
Sunny Pawar shared his excitement about being part of SIFFCY, highlighting the importance of creating content specifically for children, both by and for them. "Films made for children and made by children make SIFFCY a unique international festival. I am hopeful that more films and content will be created especially for children across the world. This is much needed," Pawar remarked, emphasizing the festival's unique position in promoting child-centric content in cinema.
SIFFCY chairman Santanu Mishra and festival director Jitendra Mishra expressed their enthusiasm for this year's lineup, particularly the India premiere of "The Tiger's Nest." Mishra noted the significant role cinema plays in shaping young minds and expressed excitement about presenting a film as celebrated as "The Tiger's Nest" to the Indian audience.
Alongside film screenings, the festival will host various creative workshops and panel discussions, enhancing the educational aspect of the event. This highlights SIFFCY's commitment not just to entertainment but also to the intellectual and creative development of young minds through cinema.
In conclusion, the 11th edition of SIFFCY promises to be a vibrant celebration of international cinema for children and youth, with a special focus on fostering a global cinematic culture among the younger generation. Through its diverse selection of films, workshops, and discussions, SIFFCY continues to play a crucial role in shaping the perspectives of young audiences towards global cinema.
