Shortage of teaching staff in DTU

New Delhi: Delhi Technological University (DTU) is facing a shortage of teaching staff with over 100 posts lying vacant besides lacking adequate infrastructure, Delhi government officials said.

According to Directorate of Training and Technical Education, over 100 teaching positions out of 345 sanctioned posts at DTU are lying vacant.

"Out of the 345 sanctioned posts, only 202 regular posts have been filled up. Further, a recent inspection revealed that the equipment used are obsolete and the infrastructure inadequate," a Delhi government official said.

In a recent meeting, Delhi Lieutanant Governor Najeeb Jung expressed concern over the prevailing vacancies and said they should be filled up without any delay.

He suggested advertisements for the posts of teaching and supporting staff should be released in accordance with rules and the process of filling up of posts should be expedited.

To avoid disruption of teaching till regular appointment is made, Jung asked the vacancies in the colleges and other technical institutes to be filled up on contract-basis within three months as a 'stop-gap arrangement', officials said.

Further, when the officials suggested that a separate selection committee should be constituted to fill up the large number of vacant teaching posts, Jung said, "it was advisable to go through the UPSC to ensure recruitment in a fair and transparent manner." The fee structure, Jung observed, was in the higher side and thus the department is looking into it.

According to the department officials, there was a need to review the affiliation process of private institutions by the University.

Officials said expert committees will be formed which will inspect if the private institutions affiliated with the University are complying with the AICTE and UGC norms in terms of faculty, building, lab equipment and other training infrastructures.

Principal secretary has been asked to put up a proposal in this regard. Apart from that, the Directorate of Training and Technical Education will also launch a special drive to fill up the vacant posts in ITIs and Polytechnics on contract basis so that the students do not suffer.
