The Idukki district administration in Kerala has declared a holiday for all schools, colleges, and educational institutions on October 22, 2025, due to heavy rainfall and the risk of landslides and flooding in several parts of the district. The announcement was made after continuous downpours disrupted daily life and road connectivity in hilly regions.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Idukki is under an orange alert, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall ranging between 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours. Neighboring districts like Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, and Kottayam have also been experiencing moderate to heavy rains.

District Collector Sheeba George stated that the decision was taken in the interest of student safety, considering the worsening weather conditions. Schools that were scheduled to conduct exams will reschedule them, and principals have been instructed to inform students of new dates. While regular academic sessions are suspended, some institutions may opt for online learning if conditions permit.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has urged residents to remain cautious, especially in landslide-prone regions such as Munnar, Devikulam, and Thodupuzha. Local authorities have also been directed to monitor dams and water levels in rivers to prevent overflow situations.

Meanwhile, rescue teams including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire and rescue units, and police personnel are on high alert to respond to emergencies. The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas vulnerable to mudslides and flash floods.

Power outages and minor disruptions in transportation have been reported in some rural areas, but officials are working to restore normalcy. The Meteorological Department has also warned that the current rain spell may continue for the next few days, driven by a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea.

The Kerala government continues to monitor the situation closely, with the Chief Minister's Office reviewing district-wise rainfall data and preparedness measures. Relief camps have been set up in low-lying regions to assist affected families if required.

Students and parents are advised to follow updates from local authorities and the Idukki District Collectorate's official website or social media handles for the latest information on school reopening and weather conditions.
