Over 21,500 Colleges Empowering 580,000 Students To Become Industry-Ready Professionals

In India, over 21,500 colleges are providing internships and skill development to more than 5.8 lakh students, enhancing their employability in a competitive job landscape. The initiative, supported by government bodies, has led to thousands of internships and job placements, preparing students for the evolving job market.

The initiative by over 21,500 higher education institutions in India to prepare their 5.8+ lakh students for the industry by providing skilling and internship opportunities is making significant strides in bridging the academic and industry divide. This effort is crucial in enhancing the employability of students in a competitive job landscape. By enabling students to acquire industry-relevant skills and gain practical experience, colleges are playing a pivotal role in making students career-ready.

Internships Enhance Employability For Indian Students

As part of their mission to facilitate students' transition into the workforce, colleges have been actively engaging their training and placement cells to provide pathways for internships and skill development. This has led to more than 5.87 lakh internship and job applications being submitted by students over the past year. Internships have proven to be invaluable for students to grasp the dynamics of various industries, apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, and hone soft skills that attract future employers.

With the backing of government bodies like the UGC and AICTE, the push for internship and skilling opportunities extends beyond engineering and management institutions to include degree colleges across the nation. This nationwide initiative not only boosts the job prospects for students but also enhances the reputation of educational institutions by producing graduates who are ready for employment. The collaborative efforts of training and placement officers and academic staff are integral in guiding students toward these career-advancing opportunities.

In 2023, a notable achievement was seen as over 33,800 students secured internships and jobs, a figure that is anticipated to grow in 2024. The financial benefits of these internships are significant, with an average monthly stipend of ₹4,200 and a high of ₹60,000. Moreover, students who transitioned from internships to full-time roles or secured new job opportunities saw annual salaries ranging between ₹3 lakh and ₹12 lakh, reflecting the high value placed on internship experiences by employers.

Internships serve as crucial stepping stones in securing employment and building professional networks, with about 12% of students turning their internship opportunities into full-time positions. Cities such as Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, and Jaipur are leading as hubs for securing internships and jobs, thanks to their dynamic industries and proactive training and placement officers.

Additionally, to keep pace with the evolving job market, colleges are encouraging students to pursue certification courses in sought-after domains like data science, digital marketing, programming, and design. Roughly 5 lakh students have completed at least one certification course, underscoring the importance of continuous learning and skill development in achieving career readiness.

A significant majority, 78% of students who landed internships, opted for work-from-home roles. This mode of working enables them to balance their academic responsibilities while gaining valuable practical experience. Conversely, about 20% of students chose in-office roles, providing them with hands-on professional exposure. Sarvesh Agrawal, the founder and CEO of Internshala, pointed out the crucial role colleges play in paving students' career paths, inspired by his own experiences at IIT Madras. He emphasized, "The report showcases the efforts of 21,500+ colleges across India in enhancing employability for their 5.8 lac+ students, moving towards making all HEIs in India capable of preparing the 40 million+ Indian students for their careers."

The concerted efforts of colleges across India to merge academic learning with practical industry exposure is a testament to their commitment to producing employable graduates. This initiative not only enhances the students' career prospects but also contributes significantly to the nation's workforce development.
