Varanasi Schools Transition To Online Classes Amid Maha Kumbh Crowds

The Varanasi district administration has mandated online classes for students up to year 8 due to the Maha Kumbh. Rural schools will remain open, ensuring minimal disruption to education while managing the influx of pilgrims.

With the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj drawing large numbers of pilgrims to Varanasi, the local district administration has taken measures to adjust to the increased footfall. In response, Varanasi's district magistrate has mandated that schools within the city's urban areas transition to online classes for students up to year 8 until February 8. Arvind Kumar Pathak, the Basic Education Officer, announced this adjustment, noting that it applies to all educational institutions, including government, government-aided, as well as those affiliated with CBSE, ICSE, and other educational boards, regardless of the medium of instruction being English or Hindi.

Varanasi Schools Go Online For Maha Kumbh

Despite these changes, schools located in the rural districts surrounding Varanasi will not be affected by this directive and are expected to continue with their regular in-person classes. This distinction underscores the administration's targeted approach to managing the influx of visitors, primarily affecting the urban centers where the majority of pilgrims are likely to congregate.

Continuation of Administrative and Maintenance Tasks

Furthermore, while classroom learning is halted temporarily, essential administrative and maintenance tasks within these institutions will proceed as planned. Pathak detailed that activities such as Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) processing, Aadhaar seeding, along with maintenance and improvement efforts under 'Operation Kayakalp'—aimed at enhancing school infrastructure—are to carry on without disruption. To ensure these operations go smoothly, teachers and other school staff are required to be present on-site, highlighting the administration's efforts to maintain educational operations amidst the adjustments.

Additionally, any training programs for teachers or staff that were previously scheduled will proceed without any postponement. This decision reflects the administration's commitment to keeping the educational activities running as smoothly as possible, despite the temporary shift to online learning for students up to class 8 in urban areas.

In summary, the Varanasi district administration's decision to shift to online classes in urban areas while keeping rural schools open, alongside the continuation of crucial school functions, represents a balanced approach to managing the increased number of pilgrims due to the Maha Kumbh. This strategy ensures that educational pursuits are minimally disrupted while also accommodating the city's temporary increase in population.
