NET is organised twice a year by The National Educational Bureau of UGC; in June and in December. The test is to determine eligibility for lectureship and for award of junior research fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research.

However, this time Hindi has come out to be the most preferred subject, with History coming in at second and Education on the third spot.

Majority of candidates chose Hindi, amounting to 4,680 aspirants, whereas for the December 2012 exam, 4,461 had opted for it.

The biggest fall of candidates has been registered in those opting for History subject, which had 5,995 candidates in December 2012 exam as opposed to 4,524 aspirants this year. Education has, however, managed to attract more candidates.

If one compares the number of applicants with the June 2013 exam, the number has risen, as around 25,811 had registered for the exam as compared to 26,300 for the December exam. This time, applications for a total of 55 subjects have been received at the Allahabad centre that also includes one candidate of 'Bodo' subject also.
