Odisha's Health and Family Welfare Minister, Mukesh Mahaling, has made a commitment to the assembly that the state's government is working towards ensuring that each district will have its own medical college. This pledge, initially part of the BJP's manifesto, is now being actively pursued by the government. "I want to assure the House that we will keep the promise made in our manifesto to open new medical colleges with funding from both the Centre and state, so that every district can have at least one such institute," stated Mahaling. This ambitious plan aims to significantly enhance healthcare education and services across the state.

The estimated financial commitment for establishing a 100-seat medical college is between Rs 250 crore to Rs 300 crore. The Union government has agreed to cover 60% of the costs associated with this venture. This financial model highlights a collaborative effort between the state and central government, reflecting a shared commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and education in Odisha. The minister emphasized the strategic partnerships with central government organisations such as the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and the National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO), which have already contributed to the establishment of medical colleges in Sundargarh and Talcher in Angul, respectively. Additionally, a medical college in Keonjhar has been funded by the District Mineral Foundation (DMF), showcasing a diversified funding approach.
Addressing the staffing needs of these upcoming medical institutions and existing healthcare facilities, Mahaling revealed plans for a significant recruitment drive. "We have brought two amendments in the doctors' recruitment rules. Very soon, we are going to start the process for recruitment of 5,000 doctors and 3,000 paramedical staff." This initiative is poised to bolster the healthcare workforce in Odisha, ensuring that the new and existing medical colleges and healthcare facilities are adequately staffed with skilled professionals. This move not only aims to fill the current vacancies but also to prepare the state's healthcare system to meet the demands of an expanding infrastructure.
The comprehensive strategy laid out by the Health and Family Welfare Minister underscores a robust plan for enhancing Odisha's medical education and healthcare services. Through significant financial investments, strategic partnerships, and a massive recruitment drive, the state government is laying down a solid foundation for achieving its goal of a medical college in every district. This initiative promises to make quality medical education more accessible across the state and improve healthcare services, aligning with the government's commitment to health and well-being for all its citizens.
