The National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) will be renamed the IIM-Mumbai after both Houses of Parliament passed the IIM (Amendment) Bill 2023 on Tuesday, giving Mumbai its own famous Indian Institute of Management. The NITIE will be the country's 21st IIM and the second in Maharashtra, following the IIM Nagpur, which was the first of six new-generation IIMs founded by the Government of India in 2015.

It will provide more MBA places to CAT hopefuls now that it has its long-awaited IIM. There is currently no full-fledged IIM in Mumbai, despite the state of Maharashtra having two IIM campuses: IIM Nagpur and IIM Indore (Mumbai campus). The Government of India has opted not to create a new building or campus for IIM Mumbai, instead incorporating one of India's most prestigious and prominent management colleges.
The NITIE Mumbai was founded in 1963 with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme and the International Labour Organisation. For the past 60 years, it has been a major institution in the field of business education, earning a reputation as an exemplary B-School and making substantial contributions to management education.
There are currently 20 IIMs in the country, and the promotion of NITIE Mumbai to the IIM level will signal the formation of the country's 21st IIM. This decision appreciates NITIE's efforts as well as its compatibility with management education ideas and standards, according to FPJ.
