Established in 1960 as the Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), the institute was later upgraded to NIT status in 2002, marking its transition into a nationally recognized centre for technical education and research. The development of the institute is closely associated with the contributions of U. Srinivasa Mallya, whose efforts played a key role in establishing the institution. The campus is named Srinivasnagar in recognition of his contributions.
Located in Mangaluru (formerly Mangalore), the institute is situated in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada. The region is known for its role as an educational and commercial hub in Karnataka. The NITK campus lies along the Arabian Sea coastline and offers a well-developed academic environment with infrastructure that includes academic departments, research laboratories, hostels, and residential facilities.
For the 2026-27 admission cycle, NITK Surathkal offers a wide range of postgraduate programmes. M.Tech programmes are available in various engineering specializations, while M.Sc programmes cover core science disciplines. The institute also offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme through its management department. In addition, PhD programmes are available for candidates interested in advanced research in engineering, science, and interdisciplinary areas.
Admissions to postgraduate engineering programmes (M.Tech) are generally based on valid scores in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, followed by centralized or institute-level counselling processes. Admission to MBA programmes may involve national-level entrance tests such as Common Admission Test or equivalent examinations, along with further selection procedures. For M.Sc programmes, candidates are typically required to qualify through relevant national-level entrance tests, while PhD admissions involve written tests and/or interviews conducted by respective departments.
