New Zealand PM Announces NZEA 2025 Scholarships and Virtual Internships for Indian Students
The New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA) 2025 have been announced, bringing exciting opportunities for Indian students aspiring to study in New Zealand. The New Zealand Prime Minister revealed this initiative during an event at IIT Delhi, highlighting the country's commitment to fostering educational ties with India.
With a scholarship fund of NZ$260,000, the NZEA will support Indian students in their pursuit of higher education in New Zealand. Additionally, several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between leading Indian and New Zealand institutions to promote academic cooperation and research collaborations.
Virtual Internships: Bridging Academia and Industry
To provide students with practical industry exposure, a Virtual Internship Programme was introduced. This initiative offers 30 IIT Delhi students the chance to work remotely with New Zealand-based companies, gaining hands-on experience and insights into New Zealand's innovative work culture.
Eligibility Criteria for NZEA Scholarships
Indian students planning to study in New Zealand can apply for the NZEA 2025 scholarships if they meet the following criteria:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must hold Indian citizenship and not be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand or Australia
- Must be residing in India at the time of application
- Must meet Immigration New Zealand's student visa requirements
- Must have an unconditional admission offer from a New Zealand university

It is advisable for applicants to check specific eligibility criteria with their chosen universities to ensure compliance.
India-New Zealand Strategic Collaborations
The event also highlighted key academic partnerships designed to strengthen educational ties between the two nations. Notable collaborations include:
- University of Auckland with Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) & IIT Kharagpur - Focused on research collaborations and student exchange programs.
- University of Auckland with Tech Mahindra - A pilot internship program aimed at merging academic knowledge with industry needs in fields such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum computing.
- University of Waikato with Bennett University - Establishing joint study programs and pathways in law, business, and engineering.
- Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design with NID & NIFT - Developing exchanges and collaborative projects in design and innovation.
Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Another significant announcement was the launch of the New Zealand Centre Innovation Fellowship, which aims to enhance collaboration in innovation and entrepreneurship between India and New Zealand. Key features of this fellowship include:
- A two-week immersive experience in India's innovation ecosystem
- Support for travel, accommodation, and a stipend
- Opportunities to network with industry leaders and explore potential collaborations
New Zealand's Growing Appeal for Indian Students
With over 7,300 Indian students enrolled in New Zealand as of 2024, the country is increasingly becoming a preferred destination for higher education. Its affordable tuition fees, high-quality academic programs, and post-study work opportunities make it an attractive option for Indian students.
During the event, the New Zealand Prime Minister emphasized the importance of education in transforming societies and economies, reflecting on discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the role of education in fostering growth and innovation.
Updated Post-Study Work Visa Regulations
- Students completing a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) of at least 30 weeks and progressing to a Master's degree can now apply for a PSWV without the 30-week enrollment requirement for the Master's program.
- For a three-year Post Study Work Visa, students must:
- Complete at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand during a Master's program
- Hold an eligible New Zealand qualification
- Apply within the designated timeframe
