NEET News: Tamil Nadu Passes Order Offering 7.5 Per Cent Quota In NEET For Govt School Students

NEET News: The Edappadi Palaniswami-led AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu has passed an order offering 7.5 per cent reservation for government school students qualifying NEET seeking admission to various UG medical courses - MBBS, BAMS, BDS, BSMS, BHMS and BUMS.

The NEET quota is likely to benefit students who have studied from Class 6th to HSC or Intermediate in corporation schools, tribal and Adi Dravidar schools, municipal schools, Kalla schools, schools managed by forest department, and other schools maintained and run by various departments in the state.

While the Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit is yet to give his approval for the NEET reservation bill seeking more time, the NEET order is likely to implemented from the academic year 2020-21.

Justifying the move for providing 7.5% NEET reservation to school students, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said, "Of the 7,968 higher secondary schools in the state, 3,054 schools (38.32 percent) have been run by the government. Of the 8.41 lakh students in higher secondary courses, 3.44 lakh students (41 percent) were in government-run schools. Of the 5,550 medical seats in Tamil Nadu, 4,043 are of state quota. Of this, only 0.15 percent of seats have been given to students hailing from poor economic backgrounds who study in government schools," a reported in the Mint

The NEET reservation bill is based on the recommendations made by Justice P. Kalayarasan committee, a retired Judge of Madras High Court, which sought 10% reservation of seats for students who have studied in state government schools, leading to the Tamil Nadu government passing the GO offering 7.5 per cent NEET quota for the concerned students.
