NCERT Proposes Inclusion of Classes 9 to 11 Marks in Class 12 Board Results

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced a new evaluation model for Class 12 board exams. According to the recent report by NCERT's PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development), this updated assessment approach will take into account students' performance from Classes 9 to 11, as well as their achievements in vocational and skill-based training.

Class 12 Results to be Based on Class 9-11 Marks

Introduction of a New Evaluation Model:

The report, titled "Establishing Equivalence across Education Boards," proposes a comprehensive assessment model that includes aggregate performance metrics from Class 9 through Class 11. The evaluation distribution is outlined as follows:

  • Class 9: 15% of the final evaluation
  • Class 10: 20% of the final evaluation
  • Class 11: 25% of the final evaluation
  • Class 12: The remaining 40% of the final evaluation

This new model aims to create a more balanced and comprehensive assessment system that reflects students' academic journey over several years.

Role of PARAKH:

PARAKH, a regulatory body established by NCERT under the Ministry of Education, previously advocated for a standardized assessment approach across all educational boards in India. This latest report aligns with PARAKH's mission to ensure that student evaluations are equitable and holistic.

Detailed Marking Scheme:

The proposed marking scheme provides a clear framework for how students will be assessed from Class 9 to Class 12:

  • Class 9: 70% of the marks will come from formative assessments (continuous assessment through projects, quizzes, etc.), and 30% from summative assessments (end-of-term exams).
  • Class 10: An equal weightage is given, with 50% of the marks derived from formative assessments and 50% from summative assessments.
  • Class 11: The evaluation will be based on 40% formative and 60% summative assessments.
  • Class 12: The final assessment will consist of 30% formative and 70% summative assessments, reflecting the increased emphasis on end-of-term exams in the final year of schooling.

Inclusion of Vocational and Skill-Based Subjects:

The report also emphasizes the integration of vocational and skill-based subjects into the curriculum, such as Data Management, Coding, Application Development, Artificial Intelligence, Music, Arts, and Crafts. This inclusion is designed to equip students with practical skills that are increasingly in demand in today's workforce, ensuring they are better prepared for future careers.

Enhancing School Infrastructure and Teacher Performance:

In addition to revising the assessment model, the report highlights the need for continuous evaluation of teacher performance and improvements in school infrastructure. This includes ensuring that schools are equipped with essential resources like access to clean water, well-stocked libraries, and adequate sports facilities, all of which contribute to a more conducive learning environment.

A Holistic Approach to Education:

By incorporating these changes, NCERT aims to create a more holistic and equitable assessment model. This new approach not only measures students' academic achievements but also considers their overall capabilities and readiness to face future challenges, thereby fostering a more comprehensive education system.
