National Science Day (NSD) serves as a tribute to the remarkable scientific breakthroughs that have significantly impacted our world. The theme for NSD 2024, unveiled by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science & Technology, is "Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat." This theme emphasizes India's dedication to fostering innovation and self-sufficiency in the realm of science and technology.

Theme for National Science Day
The chosen theme, "Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat," underscores the importance of locally developed solutions to address societal challenges and enhance overall well-being. It signals a strategic commitment to enhance public awareness and appreciation of science, technology, and innovation, showcasing the achievements of Indian scientists.
The theme not only signifies a new era but also provides an opportunity for collaboration between the public and scientific communities, both nationally and internationally. This collaboration aims to contribute to the well-being of India and humanity at large. Emphasizing the importance of achieving self-reliance in India through science, the theme highlights the need to address subjects that hold significance for humanity as a whole.
National Science Day
National Science Day (NSD) is observed annually on 28 February to commemorate the discovery of the 'Raman Effect.' The Government of India officially designated this date as NSD in 1986. On 28 February, Sir C.V. Raman announced the groundbreaking discovery for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1930. Throughout the country, theme-based science communication activities are organized on this day, triggering celebrations in schools and colleges.
In the context of recent scientific accomplishments, it is noteworthy that India's global standing has witnessed a significant rise over the past decade. Globally, we rank among the top five countries in scientific research publications, hold the 40th position in the Global Innovation Index (GII), showcasing a remarkable climb from the 81st rank in 2015. Moreover, our patent filings have surpassed 90,000, marking the highest in two decades.
