In a remarkable achievement that puts traditional healing practices in the limelight, the National Institute of Siddha (NIS) has officially set a new Guinness World Record. This feat was accomplished by administering Varmam therapy to 567 individuals simultaneously at the institute's campus located in Tambaram, Chennai. This event was not only a showcase of the Siddha medicine's non-invasive, drug-free approach but also highlighted the effectiveness of Varmam therapy, a distinguished element within the Siddha medicinal system.

Varmam therapy, with its roots deeply embedded in the Siddha system of medicine, is celebrated for its proficiency in addressing a variety of health issues, notably musculoskeletal pains, injuries, and neurological conditions. Unlike the common misconception of Varmakalai - the martial art form associated with Varmam - as merely a combat skill, it is in fact a scientifically supported therapeutic technique. This approach is specially designed to manage and treat both acute and chronic diseases including stroke, arthritis, and trauma-induced injuries. The recent event, featuring 567 trained Varmanis (Varmam healers) treating an equal number of individuals, was a powerful demonstration of this traditional therapy's broad-reaching healing capabilities.
The Union Minister of State for Ayush (Independent Charge), Prataprao Jadhav, and other officials have lauded this achievement. The Ayush Ministry praised the initiative, emphasizing the historical significance and medicinal value of Varmam therapy within the Siddha system. This form of therapy is known for its quick effectiveness in alleviating various ailments, thus underscoring the Siddha system's rich healing heritage.
Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, expressed that such events transcend beyond achieving records; they play a crucial role in enlightening the new generation about the scientific foundations and benefits of traditional practices. He remarked, "This type of event is not just about achieving an award; it's about raising awareness among the new generation and helping them understand the science and value behind such wonderful practices." This sentiment reflects a broader objective to not only showcase but also educate the public on the significance of traditional healing systems, especially Siddha medicine.
Furthermore, the impact of this record-setting event extends beyond the immediate acclaim. R Meenakumari, Director of the NIS, pointed out that this Guinness record is a significant step towards garnering global and national recognition for the Siddha system of medicine. "This Guinness record will help the Siddha system of medicine to get a lot of attention from the world and within India", she stated, highlighting the potential for increased interest and respect for Siddha practices.
The growing interest in traditional healing systems, including Siddha medicine, represents a pivotal movement towards integrating ancient wisdom with modern healthcare practices. The National Institute of Siddha's recent achievement not only sets a new Guinness World Record but also serves as a testament to the enduring value and efficacy of traditional therapeutic methods. As the Siddha system of medicine continues to gain prominence on both a national and global scale, events like these play a vital role in ensuring the legacy and scientific basis of traditional practices are recognized and appreciated widely.
