Modern education for India's large youth population: President

Modern education for India's youth growth

President Pranab Mukherjee has emphasised the need for providing modern education to the country's large youth population to take forward its aspirational agenda of change.

Speaking at the annual day function of Gondia Education Society, Mukherjee said those in the 13-35 years' age group account for more than 40 per cent of the country's population.

"By 2030, 16 years from today, we will have the largest working population of the world living in India....this huge youth force, who can bring a new era, must be educated, must be empowered," the President said.

The proportion of working age population between 15 and 59 years is increasing, with 63.5 million being added likely to this group between 2011 and 2016, he said and urged the students to do their best for the development of the country and their personal advancement also.

Paying homage to late Manoharbhai Patel, the founder of Gondia Education Society, on his birth anniversary, Mukherjee said Patel overcame great hardships in life and rose to become an industrialist, political leader, philanthropist and social reformer.

Inspired by Gandhian ideals, he worked for the betterment of society and the Gondia Education Society was the culmination of his visionary efforts, he said.

Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar attended the function organised under the leadership of Union Minister Praful Patel.
