On February 16, 2025, CEPT University, in a strategic partnership with Getty and the Indian National Trust for Art and Culture Heritage (INTACH), orchestrated a groundbreaking discussion titled 'Modern Architecture as Heritage.' The conversation, hosted at BNB Hall on the university's premises, served as the commencement of the face-to-face segment of the 'Modern Architecture Conservation in India - 2025' training course. This program is designed to cultivate an appreciation for modern architecture's role in India and beyond while also providing participants with the necessary skills for its preservation.

The initiative was highlighted by an inaugural speech from Prof. Barjor Mehta, President of CEPT University, who stressed the significance of such dialogues. The event featured insights from Susan Macdonald, Head of Buildings and Sites at the Getty Conservation Institute; Kartikey Sarabhai, Director of CEE; and Miki Desai, a former professor at CEPT University. Their discussions were followed by a panel debate, steered by Kiran Joshi from ICOMOS, focusing on the nuances of conserving modern architecture both locally and globally.
Susan Macdonald presented a comprehensive historical analysis of modern architecture's conservation on an international scale. The subsequent presentations zoomed in on India's modern architectural landscape. Kartikey Sarabhai explored Ahmedabad's rich collection of modernist works, enriching his talk with personal stories and family experiences. Miki Desai shared his extensive documentation of modern buildings within Ahmedabad and Gujarat, narrating the stories behind several significant constructions. Together, the speakers not only celebrated Indian modernism but also discussed the hurdles facing its preservation and proposed solutions for the future.
Dr. Parul Munjal, Director of INTACH Heritage Academy, alongside the Getty team, expressed enthusiasm about kickstarting the conservation course in Ahmedabad, highlighting the gathering of CEPT faculty and students, Ahmedabad's professionals from architecture and conservation sectors, and local citizens. Dr. Munjal emphasized the importance of delving into the values of modern architecture and its preservation, particularly in Ahmedabad, home to a wealth of modern buildings with their unique stories and associations.
Ahmedabad's Unique Position in Modern Architecture Dialogue
Prof. Jigna Desai from CEPT University remarked on Ahmedabad's unique status as a hub for discussions on Indian modern architecture as a living culture. She expressed pride in the university's ability to host such an event, looking forward to the international dialogue it would inspire.
