After a pause of 13 days, learning institutions in Manipur's Imphal Valley and Jiribam district welcomed back students and staff on Friday, as confirmed by local officials. This return to education comes amid an improved security situation in the region, allowing students, dressed in their school uniforms, to resume their academic activities. The decision to reopen schools in the districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Kakching, Thoubal, and Jiribam follows directives from the Directorate of Education Schools and the Higher and Technical Education Department announced just a day prior.

In response to the easing of tensions, the state government facilitated a significant relaxation of curfew measures in the five valley districts and Jiribam. This move, effective from 5 am to 4 pm on Friday, was aimed at giving residents the opportunity to procure essential goods and medications. The relaxation was implemented under strict conditions, disallowing any public gatherings or events without explicit approval from the authorities, as stated in an official notice by the District Magistrates of the affected areas.
The reopening of the educational institutions marks a significant step towards normalization in the area, providing students with the opportunity to catch up on their studies and complete their syllabi ahead of impending final exams. K Biken Singh, a parent with children in an Imphal-based private school, expressed relief at this development, highlighting the importance of classroom interactions in completing the academic curriculum, especially with final assessments looming in December.
The closure of schools and colleges in the region was initially prompted by the grim discovery of the bodies of three women and three children in the Jiri and Barak rivers across Manipur and Assam. This incident, coupled with escalated violence following a confrontation that resulted in the deaths of ten insurgents, had precipitated a tense atmosphere, leading to the suspension of educational activities since November 16. The conflict, rooted in ethnic tensions between the Meiteis of the Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo groups from the adjoining hills, has led to significant loss of life and displacement since it began in May of the previous year.
With the resumption of academic activities and the temporary lifting of curfew restrictions, there's a cautious optimism in Manipur. Parents, students, and educators are embracing the return to a semblance of normalcy, albeit under the shadow of recent events that have deeply affected the region. The government's efforts to stabilize the situation reflect a commitment to restoring order and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens, with education being a critical component of this recovery process.
