Several districts of Maharashtra are witnessing heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, prompting local authorities to announce school holidays in the interest of student safety. Acting on the latest weather forecasts and recommendations from disaster management officials, the district administrations of Palghar and parts of Raigad have ordered schools to remain closed as a precautionary measure.

The decision follows a weather warning issued by the India Meteorological Department, which forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across the Konkan region from July 1 to July 3, 2026, with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations in both Raigad and Palghar districts.
According to the district administration, the school closures have been announced under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, relevant circulars issued by the Maharashtra School Education Department, and the latest IMD weather advisory. The move aims to minimize the risk to students and school staff during adverse weather conditions.
In Raigad district, schools have been directed to remain closed in the following talukas:
The decision was taken after Tehsildars from these talukas recommended a temporary closure due to continuous rainfall, waterlogging, and the possibility of flooding and landslides.
Similarly, Palghar district has also announced a holiday for schools as the district is expected to experience intense rainfall during the forecast period. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and follow official advisories issued by local administration and disaster management agencies.
The district administrations emphasized that the safety of students remains the top priority. Heavy rainfall can lead to flooded roads, overflowing rivers, traffic disruptions, and reduced visibility, making daily travel unsafe for school-going children. By temporarily suspending classes, officials aim to prevent accidents and ensure that students remain safe at home until weather conditions improve.
Parents have been advised to stay updated through official announcements from their respective schools and district administrations regarding the reopening of educational institutions. Schools are also expected to communicate any changes in schedules, online learning arrangements, or revised academic plans if necessary.
The India Meteorological Department has advised people living in affected districts to avoid unnecessary travel, remain alert for weather updates, and follow instructions issued by local authorities. Residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas have been asked to exercise extra caution.
With the monsoon becoming increasingly intense in parts of Maharashtra, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Further decisions regarding school closures will depend on updated weather forecasts and ground conditions over the coming days. Students, parents, and educational institutions are encouraged to prioritize safety and cooperate with precautionary measures until normalcy is restored.
