Lt. Gen Upendra Dwivedi Appointed as Next Army Chief of India

The next Army Chief will be Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, the government announced. General Manoj Pande will step down after this term. He will assume the role on June 30, following the seniority principle, dispelling previous speculation of a supersession for the position.

Lt. Gen Upendra Dwivedi Appointed as Next Army

Lt. Gen. Dwivedi, currently serving as vice chief, was commissioned into the 18 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles in December 1984. He will become the 30th Army chief of the 12-lakh strong force during a critical period, with India engaged in a prolonged military standoff with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), and persistent cross-border terrorism from Pakistan.

Extension Granted to Gen. Pande:

On May 26, the government granted a one-month extension to Gen. Pande, six days before his planned retirement. This move led to widespread speculation about a possible supersession in the military hierarchy. However, a top government official clarified that the decision was made to fill the top military post after the election process concluded.

Lt. Gen. Dwivedi's Background and Experience:

Lt. Gen. Dwivedi, an alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, like Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, has extensive experience with the threats posed by China and Pakistan. He served a two-year tenure as the GoC-in-C of the Northern Command before becoming vice chief in February this year.

China remains a significant national security challenge, with the People's Liberation Army deploying over 1.4 lakh troops along the LAC. As Northern Command chief, Lt. Gen. Dwivedi provided strategic guidance and operational oversight for sustained operations along the northern and western borders with China and Pakistan and oversaw counter-terrorism operations in J&K.

Ongoing Challenges and Modernisation Efforts:

Recent global conflicts have underscored the importance of hard power, drones, long-range vectors, force sustenance, and advanced technologies. Lt. Gen. Dwivedi will have to push for the transformation and modernization of the Army, addressing operational shortfalls in areas such as helicopters, anti-tank guided missiles, air defence weapons, and night-fighting capabilities.
The new chief will also oversee the Army's force-restructuring and optimization efforts, aiming to reduce manpower by around 1 lakh personnel by 2027.
