KU Law Students Protest for Postponement of Exams

Law students from the University of Kashmir are calling out what they consider an "unjust" and "premature" exam schedule, sparking a plea for academic fairness. These BA.LL.B 10th semester and LL.B 6th semester students argue that exams set to begin on December 6 (LL.B) and December 9 (BA.LL.B) allow too little time to complete their syllabus, causing widespread stress and a potential hit to their final performance.

KU Law Students Protest

The University has slated the BA.LL.B exams to begin on December 9 and the LL.B exams on December 6, dates many students feel have come too soon. The core issue? They've had insufficient time to complete their syllabus, with some classes only commencing in mid-September. According to student representatives, around 60% of the curriculum remains unaddressed, placing students in a highly challenging position.

Shakir Parray from Kashmir Law College voiced widespread concerns, emphasizing that it's unrealistic to expect students to be fully prepared with such limited time. Students from other law institutions, including Vitasta Law College and Sopore Law College, have echoed this sentiment, insisting that the decision undermines essential academic regulations.

The students argue that the early exam schedule contravenes the Legal Education Rules of 2008, which mandate specific instructional hours before finals. Not only does this clash with the University's typical academic calendar, but students say it also disregards guidelines from both the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Bar Council of India (BCI).

Students' anxiety is evident. "Not all of us are fast learners," shared a Sopore Law College student, expressing concern about the incomplete syllabus and lack of preparation time. For many, this exam schedule doesn't just threaten their grades-it impacts their future career prospects.

In a bid for change, students have reached out to university officials, appealing to Prof. Mohammad Hussain, Dean of the School of Law, and Dr. Majid Zaman Baba, Controller of Examinations. Their request: to postpone exams to January-February, aligning with the standard academic calendar and giving them a fair chance to prepare.

The students are not merely asking for extra time-they're asking for respect for academic standards and their educational needs. They believe that with a delay, they'll have the opportunity to complete the syllabus and fully prepare, enabling them to perform to the best of their abilities.
