The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for three districts of Kerala, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday. According to the weather department, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad are expected to receive rainfall exceeding 20.4 cm, prompting authorities to urge residents to remain alert and follow safety advisories.

In addition to the red alert, the IMD has placed Idukki, Ernakulam, Kannur, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Kasaragod under an orange alert, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall ranging between 11.5 cm and 20.4 cm. Meanwhile, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, and Kottayam are under a yellow alert, where heavy rainfall between 6.5 cm and 11.5 cm is expected.
The weather department has also issued a yellow alert for Thursday in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, suggesting that rainfall activity is likely to continue over the next 24 hours. Residents in these districts have been advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has warned that persistent rainfall may lead to landslides, mudslides, flash floods, and waterlogging, particularly in hilly regions and low-lying areas. District administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert, while emergency response teams have been deployed to vulnerable locations to handle any weather-related incidents.
Authorities have urged people living near rivers, streams, and landslide-prone zones to exercise caution and relocate if advised by local officials. Fishermen have also been asked to monitor weather updates before venturing into the sea, while commuters are encouraged to avoid flooded roads and areas prone to landslides.
With the southwest monsoon remaining active over the state, the IMD expects rainfall to persist in several parts of Kerala over the coming days. Citizens are advised to follow official weather bulletins, cooperate with local authorities, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety until weather conditions improve.
