On Thursday, the Kerala government honored renowned writer N S Madhavan with the 'Ezhuthachan Puraskaram' for 2024, celebrating his significant contributions to the Malayalam language and literature. The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs 5,00,000 and a citation, is named after Thunchaththu Ezhuthachan, recognized as the father of Malayalam language. This accolade is a testament to Madhavan's enduring influence and dedication to the literary world.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, during the award ceremony, emphasized the state's commitment to safeguarding and promoting the Malayalam language. He highlighted the government's initiatives, such as the introduction of the Malayalam Bill, aimed at encouraging the use and preservation of Malayalam. Vijayan underscored the importance of not sidelining Malayalam for the sake of other languages, including English, asserting the state's stance on linguistic balance.

Madhavan's literary prowess, exemplified by his acclaimed works such as Higuita, Thiruth, Choolaimedile Savangal, Pancha Kanyakakal, and Lanthan Batheriyile Luthiniyakal, earned him this prestigious recognition. The Chief Minister pointed out these contributions, noting their significance in enriching Malayalam literature. Vijayan praised Malayalam's capacity to address any subject matter, signaling his government's efforts to elevate its status in government and judicial affairs.

Madhavan, beyond his fiction, actively engages with the public through his columns in both English and Malayalam, showcasing his role as a thoughtful social commentator. His selection for this esteemed award was made public in November of the previous year, marking a high point in his illustrious career.

The government's endeavor to have Malayalam recognized in courts, as stated by Vijayan, is part of a broader vision to enhance the language's prominence across all spheres of state affairs.
