Kerala Government Allocates Rs 10 Lakh For Education Of Landslide-Affected Children

In a compassionate response to the tragic landslide in the Meppadi hamlet of Wayanad in July 2024, the Kerala government has committed to financially supporting the education of affected children. It was decided in a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan that financial aid amounting to Rs 10 lakh each will be given to children who have lost their parents due to this disaster. Specifically, seven children who lost both parents and 14 who lost one parent in the Meppadi village panchayat are the beneficiaries of this generous aid.

Kerala Government Aids Landslide-Affected Children

The financial assistance, sourced from the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF), is earmarked for the educational expenses of these children. The condition attached is that the funds cannot be accessed until the beneficiaries turn 18, ensuring the support is utilized for its intended purpose. This initiative adds to the previous aid provided by the Women and Child Development Department, as mentioned in a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

Proactive Measures for Rehabilitation and Education

To manage the disbursement of these funds effectively, the Wayanad Collector has been tasked with depositing the allocated amounts into the district administration's account. The monthly interest generated from these funds will then be paid to the children's guardians, ensuring a steady support for the beneficiaries' educational needs. This systematic approach underscores the government's commitment to the well-being and future of these children.

In addition to addressing immediate educational needs, the Kerala government is taking significant steps towards the long-term rehabilitation of landslide survivors. A substantial expanse of land, totaling 64.4075 hectares, is being acquired in Elston Estate for constructing a township in Vythiri taluk, Kalpetta. This township aims to provide a new beginning for those affected by the landslide in Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas of Wayanad. A budget of Rs 26.56 crore, also sourced from the CMDRF, has been allocated for acquiring the land from the estate management.

Ensuring Smooth Implementation of Rehabilitation Projects

To facilitate the smooth execution of the Wayanad Township Project, the government has approved the creation of new positions. The special officer assigned to the project is empowered to hire new staff as needed, ensuring that the township's development proceeds without delay. This strategic move not only aids in the swift implementation of the rehabilitation project but also underscores the government's holistic approach to disaster recovery, focusing on both immediate relief and sustainable resettlement.

In conclusion, the Kerala government's multifaceted response to the Wayanad landslide tragedy showcases a comprehensive approach to disaster management and recovery. Financial assistance for the education of affected children, coupled with strategic plans for rehabilitation, reflects a deep commitment to the welfare of its citizens. The initiatives undertaken highlight the government's readiness to provide both immediate and long-term support to those impacted by natural disasters.
